What do King Juan Carlos of Spain, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, movie star Michael Douglas and millions of ordinary Brits all have in common? The answer: an enduring passion for Mallorca. Today, this beautiful island is holding its own as the favourite destination for millions of package holidaymakers.
The key to this Mediterranean island’s ability to attract such a broad range of visitors lies in its huge diversity of attractions.
Mallorca is:
Magaluf with its bustling beach scene, high rise hotels and notorious night clubs.
It’s an island of swanky yacht marinas and sumptuous holiday mansions owned by the world’s rich and famous.
And it’s a place where you can still hear the goat bells tinkling on the mountain terraces in achingly beautiful countryside far from the madding crowds.
The property market in Mallorca is extremely strong with price increases in excess of 15% in the past year. In general, prices can be up to 50% higher than mainland Spain.
There are many types of properties and broad price ranges on the island. In the tourist hub of Santa Ponsa, for example, the average price for a 1 bed apartment is about €150,000 with a 2 bed at about €260,000 while you could pay up to €20m for an exceptional property in the most exclusive areas of the island.
The British buyers are strongest at the moment, which is understandable considering the strength of the pound, the large expat community and the facilities geared towards English speakers on the island.
Mainland Spaniards continue to holiday in Mallorca and a recent influx of South Americans has added to the sales climate as well.
Property is always moving and prices continually increasing due to the island’s desirability to such a broad spectrum of people. It is diverse and beautiful and therefore not subject to popularity fluctuations. This means that despite previous
price increases, property remains a very safe investment.
